What Is EMDR Therapy? A Plain-English Guide (Fairfax, VA)

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, which is a mouthful for something that’s actually pretty intuitive. It’s one of the most researched therapies for trauma, and I use it every day with mothers here in Fairfax. Let me demystify it.

The short version

When something overwhelming happens, your brain can store the memory in a raw, unfiled form — so it keeps firing as if the threat is still here. EMDR helps your brain finish processing that memory, so it settles into the past where it belongs. You still remember what happened; it just stops hijacking your body.

What a session actually looks like

We don’t dig for details and make you relive everything. First we build safety and resources. Then, while you briefly hold a target memory, I guide gentle bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or tones). Your brain does the reprocessing — at a pace you control.

What it can help with

  • Trauma — a single event or a lifetime of small ones
  • Anxiety, panic, and a nervous system stuck on alert
  • Birth trauma and medical trauma
  • The old beliefs underneath “I’m not enough”

A note on how I work

At the core of my approach is a belief that you are the expert on your own life. I’m EMDRIA certified — not just trained — and I bring warmth and, yes, some laughter into the room. This work is deep, but it doesn’t have to be grim.
