Matrescence: The Identity Shift No One Warned You About
By Sarah Hagen, LCSW
There’s a word for the disorientation you might be feeling: matrescence. It’s the developmental transition into motherhood — hormonal, physical, emotional, and relational — and it’s as big a shift as adolescence. We just don’t talk about it.
Why it feels like losing yourself
Your body changed, your relationships changed, your priorities changed, and somewhere in there the person you used to be got hard to find. That’s not you failing to “bounce back.” That’s a real identity reorganization — and it deserves support, not a pep talk.
It’s not all or nothing
You can adore your child and grieve your old life. You can be grateful and furious and exhausted in the same afternoon. Holding both is not a sign something’s wrong with you — it’s the actual emotional reality of this season.
How therapy helps
Together we make room for the grief and the growth, quiet the “good girl” voice telling you to just be grateful, and help you find your way back to yourself — a self that now includes being a mom, without disappearing into it.
