Finding a Perinatal Therapist in Northern Virginia (2026 Guide)
By Sarah Hagen, LCSW
When you’re pregnant, postpartum, or deep in early motherhood, the last thing you have energy for is vetting therapists. But the perinatal season is specialized, and the right fit matters. Here’s how to find someone in Northern Virginia who’s actually trained for it.
1. Look for perinatal certification
The gold standard is the PMH-C credential (Perinatal Mental Health Certified, through Postpartum Support International). It means specific training in pregnancy, postpartum, and maternal mental health — not just general practice. I hold this certification.
2. Ask about their approach to trauma
Birth trauma, medical trauma, and old wounds that resurface in motherhood are common. A therapist trained in EMDR can help you reprocess those experiences instead of just talking around them. I’m EMDRIA certified and use it alongside perinatal care.
3. Decide between in person and virtual
In Northern Virginia you have both. In-person care in Fairfax can feel grounding; virtual sessions let you meet from home during nap time. I offer both — in person in Fairfax and secure video anywhere in Virginia.
4. Understand the cost
Many perinatal specialists are private-pay (out-of-network), which keeps your care free of insurance diagnoses and session caps. Ask whether they provide a superbill for possible reimbursement. My fee is $225 per 50-minute session, with superbills available.
