Birth Trauma: When Your Birth Story Still Haunts You
By Sarah Hagen, LCSW
“At least the baby is healthy.” If you’ve heard that after a birth that left you shaken, you know how quickly a mother’s experience gets erased. But a birth that felt frightening, out of control, or dismissive can leave real trauma — and it deserves care, not minimizing.
How birth trauma shows up
- Replaying the birth on a loop, or avoiding thinking about it entirely
- Anxiety, dread, or panic around reminders of it
- Feeling detached from the experience, or from your baby
- Guilt or shame, or a sense that your feelings “don’t count” because the baby is fine
- Fear of getting pregnant again
Why it lingers
When an experience is overwhelming, the brain can store the memory in a raw, unprocessed form — so it keeps firing as if the danger is still here. That’s why “just move on” doesn’t work; the memory hasn’t been filed away yet.
How EMDR helps
EMDR is especially powerful for birth and medical trauma. Rather than reliving the birth in detail, we help your brain reprocess the memory so it loses its charge — you can recall what happened without it hijacking your body. This can be done weekly or in a focused intensive.
